Having spent the past three and a half decades together, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are proof that Hollywood romances really can work. But despite their longstanding commitment to each other, the two have, perhaps surprisingly, never tied the knot. So, after 34 years of speculation, Hawn has addressed the issue – and explains why her fans won’t be hearing wedding bells anytime soon.
Goldie Hawn seemed destined for a career in the spotlight. With her mother working as an actress and her father as a musician, the young star had many inroads to success. Indeed, Hawn’s love of dance was evident when she was just three years old, at which point she started learning ballet and tap. And come the time she was 18, she was running her own ballet school.
Meanwhile, Kurt Russell was making his own strides in showbiz. Following on-screen success as a child, the budding actor was quick to sign a ten-year contract with Walt Disney Studios, and his talents amazed the company’s legendary owner. In fact, Russell impressed Walt Disney so much that his name reportedly constituted the last words that the cinema icon ever spoke, or at least wrote – on a scribbled note on his desk.
In any case, as the years went by, both Hawn and Russell’s careers took flight. A familiar name thanks to her work in comedies, Hawn won acclaim for films such as 1980’s iconic Private Benjamin. Russell, meanwhile, managed to shake off his child-star status thanks to the intervention of director John Carpenter and roles including that of R.J. MacReady in 1982’s sci-fi horror classic The Thing.
But while the two were lucky in life, they weren’t so lucky in love. After divorcing first husband Gus Trikonis in 1974, Hawn tied the knot with actor and musician Bill Hudson that same year. However, though Hawn and Hudson’s union yielded children Kate – who’s now a Hollywood star in her own right – and Oliver, their marriage fell apart in 1980.
Russell, likewise, had his share of broken relationships. In particular, the future Guardians of the Galaxy actor divorced from his first wife, Season Hubley, in 1983. However, luckily, that year would see a change in romantic fortune for both him and Hawn – courtesy of a little film called Swing Shift.
You see, though not widely known by today’s audiences, Swing Shift marked the beginning of Hawn and Russell’s relationship. Blown over by his co-star’s appearance, Russell made his feelings clear to Hawn. And fortunately for him, the actress was similarly smitten, and the pair’s romance took off.
“He was so good-looking, but he had no pretense about him,” Hawn told People magazine in 2017. “I could tell right away he wasn’t a womanizer. [But] what really got me was when I watched my kids when they’d come to the set and how he was with them… He was a natural.”
Weirdly, though, this wasn’t actually the first time that the stars’ paths had crossed. In fact, Hawn first met Russell while appearing in 1968 musical The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band – in what was her first ever screen role. But it would take time before she could see the five-year age gap as less of an issue and Russell as a potential suitor.
But it seems that the best things come to those who wait. Following their first date, both stars instantly knew that they’d found the loves of their lives. And it wasn’t just Goldie and Kurt who were over the Moon about their new relationship. Proving Hawn’s initial instincts right, Kate and Oliver found a new father figure in Russell.
“The trust I got from [Russell] in terms of his dependability was priceless for me,” Kate admitted on The Howard Stern Show in 2016. “He is so honest, so brutally honest. I love him so much; he is just a great guy.”
And besides sharing the love of Kate, Oliver and Russell’s son Boston, the pair also birthed a child of their own, named Wyatt, three years after first getting together. Despite having a strong family and a loving relationship, however, Hawn and Russell – surprisingly to some – never tied the knot.
Just like most married couples, though, Hawn and Russell have had their fair share of hardships. In particular, Bill Hudson has accused the pair of estranging him from his children. “Goldie wanted to create this myth of a perfect family with Kurt, and she wanted me out,” he told The Mail on Sunday in 2015.
And Hawn and Russell have also had to face the pull of temptation from time to time. “Monogamy is a very tough order,” Hawn explained to People magazine in 2017. “You’re in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people [whom], potentially, you have fantasies about that. It really runs the risk… if you’re not aware that you could screw up a really good thing by doing that.”
Though declining to reveal any specific examples, Hawn seemed to suggest that the pair have sometimes been tempted to give into temptation – but never have. “I’m sure I’ve been party to it, and Kurt’s been – we’re all normal this way… There is, I guess, an elasticity to the relationship. Otherwise, it’s going to break.”
Through it all, though, Hawn and Russell have stayed together, and yet their refusal to take vows has led to much speculation. “Nothing can be better than what we have,” Hawn gushed to Entertainment Tonight in 1997. “But somehow, marriage means a lot to people, so yeah, I give that to them.”
Still, it seems that the couple’s refusal to get hitched is actually a key part of what has kept their relationship afloat. During an appearance on U.K. chat show Loose Women in 2016, Hawn confessed that marriage would have torn the two apart. “I would have been long divorced if I’d been married,” she said.
Seemingly influenced by her past experience with matrimony, Hawn further explained her stance on the tradition, saying, “If you need to feel bound to someone, then it’s important to be married. If you have enough money and enough sense of independence… [then] there’s something psychological about not being married.”
“For me, I chose to stay, [and] Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice,” she concluded. What’s more, Hawn revealed that their children are also in agreement – and made their stance on marriage quite clear early on. “It was perfect the way it was,” she enthused.
Now 34 years into their relationship, Hawn and Russell still get a kick out of people’s collective interest in marriage. “Everyone always asks the same question,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “We are kind of having fun with it.” Without a doubt, though, matrimony wouldn’t make this couple’s perfect pairing any more adorable.
Hawn and Russell aren’t the only Hollywood couple who’ve had to put up with fans scrutinizing their relationship. Indeed, rumors have been swirling about Nicole Kidman’s marriage to Keith Urban for a while now. And the couple were seemingly left with no choice other than to set the record straight on their supposedly turbulent match.
They are two disparate people – he a country singer, she a Hollywood actress – but Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman seem to go together like a horse and carriage. Yet despite the fact that Urban and Kidman have been married for over ten years, rumors still persist about the health of their relationship. It was highlighted again at 2017’s Emmy Awards when many claimed Urban was annoyed by his spouse kissing her co-star. But now the couple have made a momentous decision, one that should put to rest any whispers and speculation. And it may just take you by surprise…
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban first met in 2005 at the G’Day USA gala. It proved to be love at first sight – for Kidman at least. She said on Ellen in 2013, “I’m like, ‘You didn’t love me at first sight, you didn’t notice me,’ and he’s like, ‘Yes I did, but I just didn’t let on.’ But we kind of met and then about four months later he called me.”
And the call from Urban certainly went well, as the pair quickly become infatuated with each other. So much so, in fact, that they got engaged in the spring of 2006. After just a short time knowing each other, then, Kidman and Urban were getting ready for their big day.
Speaking to Elle in 2014, Kidman reminisced on the speedy engagement. She said, “I kind of like getting married and then getting to know each other; I know that it sounds incredibly strange, but to me, it’s a more natural process.”
So on June 25, 2006, the couple said their vows and got married. The ceremony took place in Kidman’s adopted homeland of Sydney, Australia, and featured many celebrity figures at the wedding. Among them were the likes of Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
However, shortly after the big occasion, Urban went through some personal trials. Indeed, in October of that same year, he checked himself into the Betty Ford Center to tackle his alcohol abuse problems. He had previously entered treatment for a cocaine problem in 1998.
Devoted to her new husband, then, Kidman flew back from a promotional trip to offer Urban her full support. However, Urban said his demons weren’t easy to overcome. Speaking of his problems with alcohol, he told People magazine in 2007, “I was going to lose it all.”
He continued, “You can choose life or you can go the other way… It’s not a matter of all the intricate stuff in between. It’s just life or no life.” He also spoke about how difficult it was for his spouse, saying, “It was very, very hard to have to have her go through that.” Ninety days after first arriving, Urban checked out of the rehab facility.
On the road to recovery, Urban began to concentrate on family matters with Kidman. And on July 2008, the couple had a baby. Yes, the two lovebirds brought their first child together – a girl named Sunday Rose Kidman Urban – into the world.
Then in 2010, they brought another addition into the family via a surrogate: Faith Margaret Kidman Urban. And perhaps Kidman’s not done just yet when it comes to children. The star told Elle in 2014, “My grandmother had her last at 49. Every month, I’m like, ‘I hope I’m pregnant!’”
So after all of the ups and downs that have transpired during their ten-plus years together, rumors still abound about the state of their marriage. Indeed, the gossiping began again earlier in 2017 after Kidman gave her Big Little Lies co-star Alexander Skarsgård a kiss on the lips at the Emmy Awards.
Some have speculated that her actions have caused a rift in the relationship, with one source coming forward to speak about Urban’s displeasure regarding the smooch. The person even told Woman’s Day that he felt she was “disrespecting and humiliating him.”
However, Kidman later addressed the kiss when she appeared on The Graham Norton Show. She told the chat show host, “I’ve got an amazing, supportive, gorgeous husband who I love more than anything in the world, and I gave Alex a congratulatory kiss, and he’s like a mannequin.”
And now, in a new twist to events, it seems that the two celebrities are ready to renew their marriage vows. The revelation comes by way of In Touch, which claims the pair are preparing to say their “I do’s” one more time.
It’s certainly a big decision for the glamorous couple to make, but it’s one which an insider claims is vital for the both of them. The source told In Touch that Urban “has realized that he can’t live without Nicole and has asked her to renew their vows. Nicole thinks it’s a great idea.”
Unlike their first ceremony, however, the source asserts that this time they want the event to be more muted. The pair “want to keep their special day as private as possible, so only their closest family and friends will be invited,” they said. “It’s going to be very low-key and very romantic.”
As to where it will be taking place, the insider claims to know this, too. “They’re secretly organizing an intimate beach ceremony for this winter in Hawaii, where Nicole was born,” they said.
The couple’s touching plan to renew their vows would certainly reaffirm their love for one another. And after years of rumors, it may also offer the perfect opportunity to quash any further tabloid speculation. Symbolically, too, the couple would appear to be leaving behind the problems of the past and moving forward into greener pastures.
Together, though, they’ve empowered each other ever since they first met. Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2007, “I think we were two lonely people. I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other. We were a mixture of frightened and brave.”
But perhaps Urban put it best in his 2007 interview for People magazine. “She said early on that she wanted to be brave with me,” he stated. “I feel there was something else at work, bringing us together and then just continuing to watch over us.” Whatever it is, long may it continue to watch over them.
